The Cell Lineage Simulator

This piece was created for the Design 4 Science competition run by the University of Sunderland in 2007, and won the Multimedia and Web category. The brief for the competition was to come up with a piece that could convey a scientific message to people who might otherwise be completely uninterested in science.

The Visual concept of this piece was based around some drawings done by a man named John Sulston, who sketched out the cell division for the entire lifespan of the worm 'C. Elegans'. The hundreds of drawings wera all done by hand in coloured pens, which is where I got the idea for the visual style of this piece.

The piece allows the user to input certain criteria that will then be aplied to the 'cells' in the simulation. This information is used to create a pattern of cells in real time, unique to each user. This piece was on diplay in Sunderland Museum, in Manchester, and at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm.
